The Senate Judiciary Committee voted unanimously for a resolution requesting that the Hawaii State Foundation on Culture and the Arts commission the statue.
Obama was born in Honolulu in 1961 and graduated from Punahou School on Oahu.
The resolution will be referred to the state Senate’s Ways and Means committee for consideration.
The resolution called for an art advisory committee to be formed that would select a location for the statue, review design proposals and select an artist.
It did not specify how the statue would be funded.
The resolution said the U.S. thrived under Obama’s presidency, noting that the national deficit shrank by two-thirds and 16 million Americans were able to obtain health care through the Affordable Care Act adopted during his administration.
It noted Obama was only the third African-American to hold a U.S. Senate seat since Reconstruction after he was elected from Illinois.

A statue of King Kamehameha the Great, who unified the Hawaiian Islands under his rule in the early 1800s, stands in front of the Hawaii Supreme Court.

Please, no statue of Obama in Hawaii. What did he do for the people of Hawaii? Chicago? Kenya? I can tell you what happened to a lot of people in various places around the world during Obama’s reign — they were murdered or slaughtered. Murdered in Chicago and Syria, slaughtered in Libya, Egypt, Syria, Iraq, Eastern Ukraine, etc.. People in the Obama Administration supported the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt, ISIS in Syria, and the Nation of Islam in the United States. Europe is now struggling to cope with the huge influx of economic migrants from the Middle East and Africa. Obama and Hillary are responsible for the murder of Qaddafi and the destruction of Libya. The “kinetic action” they took in Libya resulted in the opening of the floodgates to hundreds of thousands of North African, East African, and Sub-Saharan migrants crossing the Mediterranean Sea to get to Italy on rickety rafts via Libya. Thousands have drowned making the perilous voyage. And they keep coming, creating all kinds of problems for the host nations. Qaddafi’s government would have prevented this from ever happening. Don’t waste precious taxpayer dollars on a statue of Obama under which Hawaii’s homeless will end up sleeping. What did Obama do to solve the homeless crisis in America, the richest country in the world? He did pave something — he paved the way for war with Russia.
Sad that the majority of comments regarding a statue of President Obama are from negative thinking people who seem to glam onto self-serving conservative agendas that propagate fear, hate, finger pointing, blaming and can find no joy in the positive things that less selfish liberals contribute. Celebrate the GOOD that a person does …people! Get some love in your life.
I’d like to stand beside you and count the great things Obama accomplished in his 8 year, won a Nobel peace prize for something he “might accomplish” pulled out of Iraq and gave back the territories our soldiers fought and died for to Isis. Keep the GDP below 1.5% for 8 yrs. Just to name a few to Celebrate. Big ideas above has another small list to add to that celebration. Can’t we all just get along?
