KAILUA-KONA — Hawaii Island police arrested 21 motorists for suspected drunken driving between March 19 and Sunday. One of those drivers was involved in a traffic crash and was younger than age 21.
Kona officers arrested eight drivers while South Kohala officers arrested five, according to the Hawaii Police Department. Officers in South Hilo and Puna arrested four motorists in each district.
So far this year, there have been 254 DUI arrests compared with 295 during the same period last year, according to police.
Through Tuesday, there have been seven deaths on Big Island public roads compared with six fatalities at this time last last year, an increase of 16.7 percent.
