Vacation rules should apply to all
As a condo owner in a resort area, I believe vacation rental legislation must apply to all vacation rentals regardless of location, because the same problem issues arise regardless of location.
These issues include vacationers: paying no attention to house/charter rules, disruption in neighborhood tranquility, bringing dogs in where not permitted, causing fires and smoke damage to their rental unit and others, leaving unlit gas stoves on, or conducting activities of suspected criminal nature.
Current legislation makes it almost impossible for HOAs or AOAs to deal with these issues through changes in charter/house rules, because despite monumental efforts by boards, many owners never reply to a proxy request, effectively killing a proposed change even though the large majority of proxy responders favor the change.
Legislation should also enable the AOA or HOA boards to monitor and ensure that all vacation rental units pay the appropriate state taxes for all costs for the short-term rentals including cleaning, insurance, handling fees, etc.

Police helped in time of need
Family Support Hawaii would like to send our sincerest mahalo to the Hawaii Police Department for all of its help and support after a recent break-in at one of our offices.
We would like to thank all of the officers involved for their tremendous assistance and attention to detail during this process.
Their cooperative effort and attitude demonstrates the integrity of the Hawaii Police Department, which serves and protects our island community on a daily basis.
Thank you again.

Deeply disturbed by WH
I am deeply angered by Donald Trump’s recent attacks on the FBI, and other components of the intelligence community, including the CIA and NSA.
I spent the bulk of my working years, from the mid-1950s until the mid-1990s, in both the military and civilian components of that distinguished community, during which time I was privileged to know and respect so many people who represent the very best that our nation has to offer.
Trump would not qualify for a job at any of those agencies because he would never pass the background investigations required for access to sensitive information.
I have always been proud of my service to our country. However, I now find myself frequently embarrassed by, and ashamed of, our current government. The best and the brightest to which I referred above are being subdued by the worst chief of state in our history who will, if not stopped, destroy democracy as we know it in the United States.
