Active shooter presentation Thursday
From 6-8 p.m. Thursday at West Hawaii Civic Center, Community Forums will be hosting an informative session about active shooter awareness, preparedness and response. This session will feature Hawaii Police Department Lt. Thomas Shopay and Shawn Suzuki, Konawaena High School principal.
Shopay is a Kona resident and has worked for the Hawaii Police Department for over 18 years. The majority of that time was spent with the Special Response Team, based out of Hilo. Shopay recently transferred to Kona Patrol as a shift commander. He is a recipient of the Hawaii Police Department Silver Medal of Valor and is a graduate of the FBI National Academy in Quantico, Virginia.
Suzuki is in his 29th year in the DOE, 16th year as Konawaena High School principal.
Fire grads join ranks
The Hawaii Fire Department held commencement exercises for its 45th Fire Fighter Recruit Class on Feb. 3 at Sangha Hall in Hilo.
The new firefighters are Marcus Hoeflinger, Dayne Kato, Kiley Kawazoe, Chase Komatsu, Brock Miller, Aaron Moniz, Michael Presiados, Tysen Pasco-Brown, Stephen Shirk, Jacob Smith, Keoni Soares, Sean Soriano, William Spain, Adam Veloria, Jordan Victorine, and Brian Wilson.

Current, former, and prospective members as well as other interested persons are invited to join the League of Women Voters (LWV) of Hawaii County to hear Lance Niimi, executive assistant under Mayor Harry Kim, speak at the annual League of Women Voters of Hawaii County’s meeting 11 a.m. April 14 at the St. James Episcopal Church, 65-1237 Kawaihae Road, Kamuela.
The LWVHC meeting starts with registration at 9:30 a.m., with a welcome and call to order for the business meeting at 10 a.m.
Mr. Niimi’s talk, “Homelessness on Hawaii Island,” will start promptly at 11 a.m. A no-host luncheon follows his talk around noon (at the cost of $10 payable by cash or check to LWVHC at the door).
