Ciaramella to perform at church in Kailua-Kona
Early Music Hawaii is bringing the renaissance ensemble, Ciaramella, to Kailua-Kona.
Co-directors Adam and Rotem Gilbert will lead the five-member group playing recorders, shawms, bagpipes, gamba, hurdy-gurdy, guitar and percussion. Praised for performing intricate 15th century counterpoint, Ciaramella brings to life Renaissance music from historical events and manuscripts.
The performance will be held at the Lutheran Church of the Holy Trinity on Lako Street, in Kailua-Kona at 2 p.m. Sunday. Tickets are available online at www.earlymusichawaii.com. Admission is $25 for general seating and $10 for students with ID.

Painter Culbertson named gallery’s featured artist
The Blue Sea Artisans Gallery featured artist for the month of March is watercolor painter and digital designer Stefanie Culbertson.
Culbertson moved to Hawaii in 1989 and has been painting in watercolors for 28 years. Culbertson attended Hawaii Community College for a few years and finished her AA degrees in liberal arts and drama at Cuesta College in California, where she also worked on and off stage on productions. In 2006, Culbertson earned her BA in digital design and returned home to Hawaii and started her own business, Tiffany Arts Designs, creating graphic and digital designs and painting in watercolors.
Culbertson will feature one of her new paintings “Anuenue Mermaid Dream” part of her Anuenue Series. Her inspiration for this watercolor is her deep love for her four children and bond with the ocean.
The gallery is open from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday through Saturday and from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. on Sundays.
On Saturday, Culbertson is also hosting an Easter/Spring Art Workshop from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The workshop is free to the public and held in front of their gallery in the Keauhou Shopping Center. There will be limited space available to 20 people. Children, ages 8 and up, and adults are welcome to join. Minor children must be attended by an adult. Please stop by the gallery to sign up or call the gallery to reserve your spot. A suggested donation for materials will be accepted. Halai Healing Place holding food seminar
Halai Healing Place is holding a seminar, “Optimal Nourishment for Optimal Living,” from 8 a.m.-noon on Tuesday in Kailua-Kona and Wednesday in North Kohala.
This half-day seminar sets out to help those attending understand the fundamentals of nutrition. Those attending will understand how what you eat directly affects how you feel on every level of your being. Whether you need to overhaul or optimize your health, La`Ren Kristen, graduate from the Center for Nutritional Studies at Cornell, shares her passion in this seminar to help people make sound healthy choices based on hard evidence and scientific research, not popular authors or pseudo-science.

Rebecca Folsom returns to Volcano Arts Center
After sell-out concerts year after year at Volcano Art Center, Rebecca Folsom is returning to Volcano Art Center’s Ni‘aulani Campus for another acoustic concert from 7-9 p.m. Saturday.
Concert tickets are $25/$20 for VAC members.
An award-winning artist, Folsom has performed on BBC radio and television, at Nashville’s Bluebird, New York’s Bitterend and Red Rock’s Amphitheatre in Colorado, over the last 20 years.
The Boulder, Colorado native said performing on stage is where she feels most comfortable. “There is no place on earth that I want to be more. I’m happiest there, time flies there. It’s timeless, effortless and it brings me so much joy. My hope is always that it will bring other people joy, upliftment and awakening,” she said in a press release.
Folsom will also be offering the “The Art of Vocal Freedom” workshop from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday. Learn to sing and express authentically with ease and flow, tapping into your own personal vocal freedom. Attendees will be able to work and play with all three artistic mediums at the same time. Cost for the workshop is $50.

Harbor Gallery Winter Wood Show winners announced
The 2018 Harbor Gallery Winter Wood Show results have been announced. Harbor Gallery is poised to give more than $3,000 to the Kohala Center for its Kohala Watershed Partnership program to restore the native forest above Kawaihae. As a result of the generosity of owners Gunner and Elli Mench, Harbor Gallery has now given more than $45,000 to the cause over the last eight years.
The winners are as follows:
Best of Show: Frank Chase, for his “Ellipse Table,” a curly koa oval dining table with a starburst pattern.
First Place: Turning, Kelly Dunn, for his heavily spalted “Tamarind Bowl.”
First Place: Sculpture, Scott Hare, with a dolphins wall sculpture titled “Sisters” in curly mango.
First Place: Open, Craig Nichols, a mixed media piece with turtles called “Island Rovers.”
First Place: Joinery, Frank Chase created a free standing, curly koa jewelry cabinet, “Nofer.”
Winners will receive $100 for each first place award and $250 for best in show.
Some of the items from the latest show just ended are still on display, and can be seen daily at Harbor Gallery in Kawaihae next to Café Pesto from 11:30 a.m. until 8:30 p.m.

Bartender competition looking for submissions
The 2018 USBG Most Imaginative Bartender Competition (MIB) has kicked off, with submissions open until March 31. This month, emerging bartenders from Kailua-Kona can submit their most imaginative cocktail creations for the chance to compete amongst North America’s top mixology talents from the region.
Established as one of the industry’s most prestigious bartending competitions, the MIB program, now in its 12th year, has scoured North America and the world for the greatest undiscovered bartenders. For the third year in a row, the 16 regional finalists will travel to London – the home of Bombay Sapphire and its Laverstoke Distillery – to vie for the 2018 North American title.
The MIB regional semifinalists will be announced in April. The submissions will be narrowed down to 80 top bartenders from across the country, who will compete for a chance to represent their hometown as one of just 16 mixologists from across the continent. The regional finals competitions will take place throughout the months of May-June.
