KAILUA-KONA — A cyclist is in critical condition after a collision with a motorist on Kuakini Highway late Friday morning.
The crash occurred at 11:30 a.m. The cyclist, a 65-year-old man, was traveling north in the southbound bicycle lane on Kuakini Highway when he broadsided a vehicle exiting the Honda dealership, according to Hawaii Police. Alcohol is not a factor in the incident.
Police say the cyclist wasn’t wearing a helmet and suffered injuries to the head. He was taken to Kona Community Hospital then flown to Queen’s Medical Center on Oahu.
The driver of the vehicle, a 37-year-old woman, was uninjured in the collision.
The crash is under investigation.
Cars and bikes don’t mix. It will happen again, so watch out bikers it could be you next. Ride on dirt tracks it’s much safer.
He was going the wrong direction, areapolice. And probably not being very attentive. If cyclists follow the rules, as well as drivers, chances of accidents are much smaller. We’ve seen homeless people riding the wrong direction on Queen K as well as Kuakini, sometimes with their giant bags of HI-5’s. Not smart.
When driving your car out of a driveway onto the road it helps to look both ways before entering a traffic lane. The car driver should be cited.
