WAIMEA — Hawaiian language students from Kanu o Ka Aina have taken on the kuleana to present “Ka Lei Maile Alii,” the historic play translated to mean, “The Queen’s Women” at 6 p.m. Jan. 17 at Kahilu Town Hall.
WAIMEA — Hawaiian language students from Kanu o Ka Aina have taken on the kuleana to present “Ka Lei Maile Alii,” the historic play translated to mean, “The Queen’s Women” at 6 p.m. Jan. 17 at Kahilu Town Hall.
Open to the public, the free showing will portray a reenactment of the 1897 meeting in Hilo when Hawaiians were urged to sign a petition protesting annexation. Attendees are invited to wear period clothing of the late 1800s, and the signatures of those kupuna who signed the Kue Petition will be on display.
Schools studying the time period and community members can also view daytime presentations of the play that day from 8:30-9:30 a.m., 9:45-10:45 a.m., 11 a.m.-noon and 12:30-1:30 p.m. at the same location.
The event is sponsored by Waimea Middle School – Ike Hawaii, Waimea Education Hui, Waimea Hawaiian Civic Club and the Richard Smart Fund of the Hawaii Community Foundation.
