OCEAN VIEW — The Harry McKee Scholarship Foundation Board of Directors is inviting college bound high school seniors and current college students, to apply for the 2018 McKee Foundation $1,000 scholarship.

To be eligible, students must be residents of Ka’u District on the Big Island of Hawaii, and plan to attend any accredited college, university, technical institute or vocational school, anywhere in the U.S. Students must enroll full time in the fall of 2018. There is no specific major required and selection is based on the comprehensive application.

Applications must be mailed to the foundation office in Ocean View by Feb. 15.

Wilderness first responder course to be offered

The Hawaii Preparatory Academy Outdoor Program is partnering with the National Outdoor Leadership School to offer a 10-day wilderness first responder course on the Big Island, March 11-20.

The course is the industry standard for professional guides, trip leaders, search and rescue team members, outdoor recreationists, and international travelers.

Curriculum covers wilderness medicine, leadership, and risk management. Upon completion, participants will be able to conduct a thorough physical exam, obtain a patient history, assess vital signs, provide emergency care in the wilderness, and make crucial evacuation decisions.
