WHEA hosts dance for students
West Hawaii Explorations Academy’s eighth-grade class invites all students in grades 6-8 to attend its Black and White Ball from Friday evening in Kailua-Kona.
The middle-school dance will feature DJ Tiger, dance contest, games, raffle, photo booth and food and drinks. Attendees are asked to wear anything black or white, or black and white.
Cost is $10, which includes one raffle ticket. Attending students must complete a parent permission slip.

MyBar hosts comedy show
Comedians Jose Dynamite and Shawn Felipe perform at 8 p.m. Friday at MyBar Kona in Kailua-Kona.
Winner of season four of The Great Food Truck Race, Felipe has been the opening act on tour with Jo Koy for the past year.
Dynamite has been headlining shows on Oahu for the past four years after having spent the first nine years of his career as the opening act for Augie T.
Doors open at 7 p.m. for the show that gets underway at 8. Tickets are $10 in advance and $15 at the door.

West Hawaii County Band presents holiday concert
The West Hawaii County Band offers a free holiday concert Friday evening at Hale Halawai in Kailua-Kona.
The band will present “December Lights” at 6:30 p.m. The concert will feature a range of holiday music from the ever-popular “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” to Handel’s blockbuster “Hallelujah Chorus” from “The Messiah.” Favorites like “Stille Nacht” (Silent Night) and “Mele Kalikimaka” are also on the setlist.
The West Hawaii County Band comprises local musicians from all walks of life. It is conducted by Bernaldo Evangelista.

Ola Brew celebrates grand opening Friday, Saturday
Ola Brew Co.’s grand opening is Friday and Saturday at the craft brewery in Kailua-Kona.
This two-day event is free for all to enjoy music, prizes, ono food and a chance to join the exclusive Founders Circle that has perks for days.
Beer and cider tastings and tours will be offered both days in two sessions, first from 5:30-7 p.m. and then 7:30-9 p.m. both days.
Before and after the tastings and tours, enjoy free music, food and plenty of celebration in the brewery’s outdoor beer garden.
Friday night’s music line-up features Keola Beamer, Jeff Peterson and Moana from 7-8 p.m. followed by George Wit from 8:30-9:30 p.m. Closing out the evening is Industry Night from 10 p.m.-midnight.
Saturday night’s entertainment is Ronnie V and the Family Band from 6-7 p.m. followed by Miss Demeanor and the Felons from 7:30-8:30 and The Steppas from 9-10:30 p.m.

Celebrate Christmas in Keauhou
Keauhou Shopping Center holds its annual Christmas at Keauhou event on Saturday.
Holiday music will be performed at 10:30-11 a.m. by Kealakehe Intermediate School and at 5 p.m. by Kuleana Education.
Photos with Santa will also be available from 6-8 p.m. at the center’s Courtyard. Photo opportunities continue nightly through Dec. 23.
On Sunday, there will be a Moonshot dance show from 3:30-5 p.m.
Donations for The Food Basket, Hawaii Island’s food bank, will be accepted at each celebration.

Kainaliu Kalikimaka Saturday
The holidays will be celebrated in Kainaliu on Saturday evening.
From 5-8:30 p.m. is Kainaliu Kalikimaka, a holiday street party featuring live music at Kiernan’s Music, Santa at Damron Hall for photos, food, carolers and more. Free raffle tickets will be given away by each shop giving people a chance to win gift baskets.

Queens’ MarketPlace hosts free concert Saturday
Kohala performs a free concert Saturday at the Queens’ Marketplace Coronation Pavilion.
Part of Queens’ Marketplace’s Monthly Mini-Concert Series, the band takes the stage from 6-8 p.m.
Kohala is an acoustic blend of folk, island and jazz, reflecting the beauty of the Kohala region on the Big Island where the band members live. The trio consists of lead guitarist, Grammy Award winning Charles Michael Brotman and Rupert Tripp Jr. and Charlie Recaido who have a distinct finger picking style on steel-string guitars.
Queens’ MarketPlace also hosts holiday entertainment on Sunday, Tuesday and Dec. 21 at its Coronation Pavilion.
Ben Kaili performs 5-7 p.m. Sunday. Maluhia will offer a concert from 5-7 p.m. on Tuesday. Darlene Ahuna and Friends will take the stage from 5-7 p.m. on Dec. 21.

DMAC hosts holiday events
Donkey Mill Art Center hosts several holiday workshops and events this weekend at the nonprofit’s facility in Holualoa.
From 10 a.m.-noon Saturday is a lauhala Christmas ornament workshop led by master weaver Nanette Bell for people age 16 and older. Bell will show participants to make their choice of several simple lauhala ornament designs. Lauhala is traditional plainted weaving using leaves (lau) from the hala tree to create useful and decorative items. Cost is $25, including supplies. Advance registration required; call 322-3362 to sign up.
On Saturday, DMAC also offers parent and child holiday afternoon workshops and a Holiday Sip and Shop Pau Hana.
From 3-5 p.m., families can make ceramic ornaments using air dry clay, gift cards, and decorative wrapping paper working alongside DMAC teaching artists. The workshop is made possible by donations from the Hiroaki, Elaine and Laurence Komo Foundation. A $5 donation to cover basic materials is suggested.
From 5-7 p.m. is the Holiday Sip and Shop Pau Hana offering attendees the chance to do some holiday shopping at DMAC while enjoying complimentary wine, punch, pupu and cookies. The gallery shop features ceramics, soaps, frame ready prints, cards, calendars, aprons, shirts and more created by local artists.
Members enjoy 20 percent off all gallery shop purchases during December.

Christmas at Iwa Arts and Cafe Saturday

Merry Little Christmas, a cabaret variety show featuring some of the most loved jazz, big band and top 40 hits of the season — Kona style, is Saturday at Honua Studios in Kailua-Kona.
The 7:30-9 p.m. show features
Victoria Taimane, Laura Hall, Derek Hall, Samantha Cook, Havilah Davis, Jeremy Pyrc, Michael McClellan, Becky Kazana, Eric Dong and Island Breeze Productions with jazz musicians Raphael Costa and Terry Stratton. Production design is by Neil Sauvageau, Oriana Brown and Caleb Brown.

Holiday dance, toy drive Sunday in Kona
The Kona Ballroom Dance Club is holding a holiday dance and toy drive on Sunday in Kailua-Kona.
The event will run 6-9 p.m. at the Kona Elks Lodge on Pawai Place. Attendees are asked to bring new, unwrapped toys, gift cards, cash or checks made out to Kids Matter that will benefit child in the foster care on the Big Island. A tax deduction is available with proof of purchase.
The event is free for KBDC members and $5 for nonmembers. Attendees are also asked to “dress to impress” and bring pupu.

Tiffany and Co. at Kings’ Shops presents Mele Mele Ukulele featuring instruments made by Hawaii’s talented artists on Sunday.
A champagne brunch and ukulele viewing at Tiffany and Co. is at 11:30 followed by an ukulele auction and concert at 12:30 p.m. All proceeds from silent auction of ukulele will benefit Hawaii Island Humane Society and The Animal Community Center. The ukuleles are currently on display at Kings’ Shops.

Holiday story, craft and movie night Monday
The North Kohala Public Library plans a holiday story, craft and movie night on Monday in Kapaau.
The event runs 5:30-8 p.m. and will open with children’s librarian Leilani Silver telling a story. A holiday craft will be offered for families to make and take home. The animated movie “Arthur Christmas” (PG) will be shown accompanied by light refreshments, popcorn and hot cocoa.
This program is suitable for ages 5 and older. Young children must be accompanied by a parent or adult caregiver.

Kona libraries offer craft events
The Kailua-Kona and Kealakekua public libraries are holding holiday craft events this week.
From 3-4 p.m. on Monday, Kealakekua Public Library presents a Rudolf the Reindeer ornament crafting event. This one-hour program is suitable for ages 6 and up and is limited to the first 12 patrons. Children must be accompanied by a parent or adult caregiver. All materials will be provided. Space is limited and online Reservation is required to participate. The reservation period closes Friday.
From 4-5 p.m. Tuesday, the Kailua-Kona Public Library invites people for an evening of holiday crafting and snacks.
This program is suitable for ages 5 and up. Children must be accompanied by a parent or an adult caregiver.

COOK’s ‘Holiday Favorites’ concert coming up
The Chamber Orchestra of Kona presents “Holiday Favorites” on Tuesday at the Sheraton Kona Resort and Spa at Keauhou Bay.
The nonprofit orchestra will play a variety of holiday songs including Russian Christmas music, “Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy,” “Sleigh Ride,” “Carol of the Bells” and more. The performance gets underway at 7 p.m. with the orchestra being conducted by Bernaldo Evangelista led by concertmaster Ursula Vietze.
Tickets are $10 for general admission and $20 for preferred seating. Children and students younger than 18 enter free. They are available online at www.chamberorchestraofkona.com/concerts.html, or at the door beginning at 6 p.m.

Miner releases new album
Hawaii-based singer-songwriter Kimie Miner released her new album, “Proud as the Sun,” on Nov. 3. Of the 15 songs on the CD, 13 are original and two are covers that have a definite connection to Miner.
Miner’s album features Imua Garza’s vocals on “Sea of Love,” Deandre Brackensick singing background on five of the tracks, and Kaipo Kapua singing backgrounds on “Vein of Gold.”
“Proud as the Sun” is produced by Haku Records, distributed by Island Heritage and is available at fine music retailers throughout Hawaii and online.
Miner released her first EP, “To The Sea” in 2013 after a successful Kickstarter campaign. In 2015, she wrote and co-produced her full-length album, “Kimie Miner,” which went on to win “Contemporary Album of the Year” at the Na Hoku Hanohano Awards in 2016.
Miner is currently touring on the mainland.

Big Island glass artist juried into top state show
Leilani Pacheco-Datta was recently juried by the Hawaii Glass Artists Board of Directors to be featured in The ARTS at Marks Garage Holiday show in Honolulu.
A premier collaborative holiday retail installation, featuring creations from some of the best Hawaii glass artists, textile and printmakers, the exhibit is on display through Dec. 30.
The ARTS at Marks Garage is a collaborative gallery, performance and office space for businesses and nonprofit organizations aiming to transform downtown Honolulu with the power of the arts. Hawaii Glass Artists represents some of the best glass artisans in the State.
Writer’s Group meets Tuesday
A Writer’s Group meets at 10 a.m.-noon on Tuesday at the North Kohala Public Library in Kapaau.
Facilitator Eila Algood, a poet and writer, will moderate the meetings to give participants a chance to practice writing, discuss writing skills, share their work, enjoy useful feedback and share the joys and frustrations of the writing life. Writers of all levels are invited.
