Cookbook author
to visit Kona Stories
Author and Honolulu Star-Advertiser columnist Betty Shimabukuro will visit Kona Stories Book Store from noon-2 p.m. on Saturday.
Shimabukuro has been tracking down recipes for the newspaper’s “By Request” column since 1998. Possibly the one thing that has been requested more than any particular recipe is a cookbook. Now, readers finally have the answer to that request in “By Request: The Search for Hawaii’s Greatest Recipes.”
The cookbook is filled with the most popular, memorable and favorite recipes uncovered by the column and includes recipes for a variety of dishes from robust main dishes to essential sides and luscious desserts and treats of all kinds. A joint project of the Honolulu Star-Advertiser and Mutual Publishing, a portion of the proceeds of the sales will benefit the Institute for Human Services.
Shimabukuro will be at the bookstore to answer questions, personalize books and give out samples from By Request.

Words and Wine Tuesday in Keauhou
Selvy Thiruvengadam, Heather S. Friedman Rivera, Dennis Alstrand and Eliza Cahill will be featured during Kona Stories Book Store’s Words and Wine event at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Keauhou Shopping Center.
Thiruvengadam, a Kailua-Kona resident, is the author of “Love Ladies,” which invites readers to join seven wild and not so wild women on an annual restorative retreat that includes rising with the sun, cooking finger licking good meals, skinny dipping in the sea, napping, meditating and massage, shopping, making art, building sand trays, jamming out to good tunes and holding circle under the light of the full moon with mugs of Kona coffee.
Friedman Rivera, RN, JD, Ph.D., a Hawaii resident, is the author of “Quiet Water.” In the book, readers meet Tess Whitaker, whose gripping dreams of a lost love compelled her to walk away from a stable marriage and her teenage son. As she struggles to piece together a new life in a new town, haunting visions of a past life thrust her into a quest to find her elusive lover. Spinning out of control, Tess wonders, “Have I really gone off the deep end? Will I ever find “the one?”
Big Island resident Alstrand’s newest book, “Beatles in Your Soul” includes stories of the memories, inspirations and love for The Beatles by fans from all ages and cultures. These thoughts were captured over a three-year period of interviews and communications, and then compiled into book form.
Cahill is the author of “Strange Whorl.” She began her poetry at age 16 in California before heading to the Big Island to win the 2014 Big Island Slam-Champion, which was featured in her first book, “Paper Life Vest.” In “Strange Whorl,” readers meet an intelligent but disenchanted woman who experiences the journey of her life without even knowing it. After surviving an unusually tragic childhood, Jillian Heart, a young woman, has spiraled into deep depression and suicidal ideation. A mysterious stanger intervenes. His honesty, tenderness and razor-sharp insights trigger Jillian’s childhood demons, propelling her toward a necessary catharsis that leads to healing and an emotional evolution. With help, Jillian uncovers secrets of the universe and her past that reinvigorate and infuse her life with a long forgotten feeling — hope for the future.
Following a more formal book presentation from each author there will be a Q&A session.
The event, which also features complimentary pupu and wine, concludes at 8 p.m.

Hawaii Writers
Guild presents author readings
The Hawaii Writers Guild will present an evening of original readings by local authors 5:30-7 p.m. on Wednesday at the Thelma Parker Library, 67-1209 Mamalahoa Highway, in Waimea.
The guild is an independent association of professional writers engaged in the promotion of literacy and cultural enrichment. It presents “Lit Nite,” an evening of stories and poetry, on the first Wednesday of every month. The readings are free and open to the public.

Kona author publishes photo book
Kona author Donald Sanders recently published “The Wonder Woman Lynda Carter Photo Book,” his third in a series of tabletop photo essays of the 1970s superstars.
The 66-page book features Sanders’ memories of photographing Carter extensively for her role as Wonder Woman during the 1970s. It showcases more than 100 color and black and white photos
Sanders’ photo essays include “Farah Fawcett A Photo Essay,” “The Original Charlie’s Angel Scrap Book.”
Sanders worked in Hollywood as a still photographer for almost every major studio in the industry. In 1989, he moved to Hawaii to work at the Hyatt Regency Waikoloa, where he was a waiter. He now works in marketing for Polynesian Adventure Tours and Evening at Kahua Ranch.
