HILO — Police charged a 24-year-old Puna man in connection with a Halloween night road-rage incident in Hilo.

Beau De Dier is charged with two counts of first-degree reckless endangering and five firearms offenses. His bail was set at $15,500.

Just after 7 p.m. Tuesday, police responded to several reports of gunshots coming from a red sedan on Kanoelehua Avenue near Waianuhea Place in Hilo. A 36-year-old Hilo man reported one of the gunshots struck his home on Waianuhea Way. Officers later learned there was another vehicle involved and the confrontation stemmed from a road-rage incident, police said.

According to a police report, the Waianuhea Way resident reported five or six gunshots before hearing glass breaking in an upstairs hallway. The man investigated and found a hole through a window and another in a bedroom wall. A .45 caliber bullet was later found inside the wall.

No injuries were reported.

A second witness reported seeing a red Toyota sedan driving erratically behind her on Kanoelehua Avenue. The witness said the sedan slowed near Stainback Highway before five gunshots rang out from the car.

The woman said she saw the offending vehicle arrive at a West Lanikaula Street residence after the incident, recognizing it by its Halloween decorations.

When officers searched the vehicle, spent .45 bullet casings were found on the vehicle, with a .45 caliber handgun found within.

Passengers in the vehicle reportedly told police that De Dier fired five rounds at a vehicle.

Approximately 15 minutes after the shots were reported, police arrested De Dier and three other people, 23-year-old Michael Paoa of Puna and 20-year-old Brandon Kahakua-Victorino and 19-year-old Chazlyn Yamamoto, both of Hilo, on suspicion of reckless endangering.

The other three were released pending further investigation.

De Dier made his initial court appearance Thursday afternoon. His attorney, Deputy Public Defender Jiro Yuda, requested he be granted supervised release.

However, Deputy Prosecutor Glenn Shiigi advised against releasing De Dier based on his criminal record. De Dier was charged with domestic abuse on Oct. 22 and was out on bail when the shots were fired.

Hilo District Judge Robert Crudele agreed, maintaining De Dier’s bail and ordering him to return at 2 p.m. Monday for a preliminary hearing.
