Book fair underway

Kealakehe Elementary’s Scholastic Book Fair started on Friday and runs for two weeks until Nov. 3. The book fair is open daily from 7 a.m.-4 p.m. in the library.

The public is invited after school from 2:30-4 p.m. Extended hours will be posted in front of the library. Oct. 30 and 31 it will be open all day.

Ohana Fuels donates $10K to HOPE Services

HOPE Services Hawaii, Inc. was the most recent beneficiary of the Ohana Fuels “Fuel Up. Do Good” program. Ohana Fuels partners with nonprofit organizations that serve the needs of the local community, and donates a portion of every gallon of gasoline purchased at all Ohana Fuels stations in that community.

A portion of all third-quarter sales at all Ohana Fuels locations in the amount of $10,771.68 was donated to HOPE Services Hawaii, which serves families and individuals experiencing homelessness on Hawaii Island through service, empowerment and advocacy.

Mauna Loa work to be done

Vehicles will have limited access to Mauna Loa Lookout for eight weeks, from Oct. 30 to Dec. 31, while workers improve the parking lot, toilet and picnic area for visitors with disabilities.

During the project, the 11.3-mile road will remain open for pedestrians and bicyclists, but vehicles can only go as far as a designated parking area 5 miles below Mauna Loa Lookout. The entire parking area at the lookout will be reconstructed and repaved, and a new picnic area will be added, along with a new vault toilet, at the top of the road.

Hikers will be able to walk around the construction area to access Mauna Loa Trail and backcountry sites like Puuulaula (Red Hill) and its cabin, but it will add mileage to the hike. Bicyclists will not be allowed past the construction site.
