Manuel Eswagen
Manuel Gonzalo Eswagen, 66, of Captain Cook, died Oct. 12, 2017, at Kona Community Hospital. Born Dec. 25, 1950, in Naguimba Banayoy, Ilocos Sur, Philippines, he was a steward supervisor at Four Seasons Resort, coffee and macadamia nut farmer, and member of the Filipino Christian Fellowship.
Visitation will be held at 5 p.m. Oct. 21 at Lanakila Congregational Church in Kainaliu; 6 p.m. memorial service. Casual attire.
He is survived by wife, Lydia Eswagen of Captain Cook; son, Manny Eswagen of Seattle, WA; daughters, Lovelyn Eswagen of Las Vegas, NV, Desiree Eswagen of Oahu; sisters, Fely Eswagen of Honolulu, and Sonnyflor (Robert) Vivencio of Los Angeles, CA; brothers, Jimmy (Josie) Eswagen of Los Angeles, CA, and Wilfredo (Elma) Eswagen of Las Vegas, NV; one grandson; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Zeldawynn Kailianu
Zeldawynn “Sas” Pohakulani Kailianu, 59, of Waianae, Oahu, died Sept. 21, 2017, at Legacy Hilo Rehabilitation and Nursing Center. Born March 29, 1958, in Hilo, she was an employee of 76 Service Station and Cook’s Washerette, room cleaner and sub-custodian for Maili Elementary School, custodian for K-Mart and Walmart, and a member of Paradise Chapel in Waianae.
A celebration of life will be held 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Oct. 22 at Onekahakaha Beach Park – Pavilion 2. Casual attire.
She is survived by parents, William and Marjorie Kailianu of Keaukaha; brothers, Edwin (Butchie) Hamauku of California and William (Rachel) Kailianu Jr. of Nanakuli, Oahu; sisters, Marlene (Bob) Maroney of Las Vegas, NV, Davianne (Frank) Franklin of Lynchburg, VA, Actevia (Clarence) Kailianu-Cox of California, Rachel Kailianu and Bridgette (David) Kamakini, both of Waianae, Oahu; Raynette (Kaey) Shibata, Vernetta Kailianu, Tania Kailianu and Marsella (Gordon) Ferreira, all of Hilo, and Mona (Eugene) DeRego of Honolulu; numerous nieces and nephews.

Bettylou Ackerman
Bettylou “BJ” Jenkins Ackerman, 81, of Kealakekua, died Oct. 6, 2017, at Nakamaru Hale in Holualoa. Born Nov. 10, 1935, in Holualoa, she was a retired lomilomi massage therapist, front office manager for the former Kona Inn Resort and a founding member of Calvary Community Church.
A celebration of life for both Betty and her departed husband, James “Sonny” Ackerman, will be held at a later date. Tisha Leina’ala Wilhelm Carvalho, 42 , of Hilo, died Sept. 18, 2017. She was born Feb. 18, 1975, in Honolulu.

Donna Marie Stickel, 67, of Volcano, died Sept. 24, 2017, at Hospice of Hilo’s Pohai Malama Facility. Born June 1, 1950, in Newton, New Jersey, she was a retired chef, the founder of Friends Feeding Friends in Volcano, and member of Christ Lutheran Church in Hilo.

Cathleen Swedelius
Cathleen Ann “Cathy” “Cat” Swedelius, 68, of Kailua-Kona, died Aug. 9, 2017, at Tripler Army Medical Center. Born Feb. 22, 1949, in Seattle, she was a psychiatric social worker, past president and board member of AdvoCATS, and a retired U.S. Air Force captain.

Pamela Burns, 65 died Sept. 18, 2017, at home in Makiki, Oahu. Born Dec. 16, 1952, in Hilo, Burns was a CEO of the Hawaiian Humane Society.

A celebration of life for Charles L. Bauguess Jr., 64, of Mountain View, has been changed to 8:30 a.m. Oct. 21 by the Pohoiki pier.
