KAILUA-KONA — Authorities are investigating the theft of two county vehicles later found torched in South Kona.
The vehicles were stolen between Oct. 7 and 9 from the Department of Public Works baseyard in Kealakekua. According to the weekly crime report, a white 2008 Honda Civic and a white 2006 Jeep Liberty were stolen from the scene.
Hawaii Police Maj. Robert Wagner said the vehicles were locked behind a gate with the keys in their ignitions. The suspects also damaged the entry/exit gate upon leaving the scene.
The vehicles were found burnt a few days later 7 miles away in the Honaunau area.
There are no leads on suspects at this time.
Wagner said officers don’t recall a theft of this nature occurring at the baseyard in the past.
Anyone with information regarding the incident should call the Hawaii Police Department at 935-3311.
