BIRC Couch to 5K
Big Island Running Company is offering a free Couch to 5K training program starting today at 5 p.m. at the Alii Drive store.
This 9-week program is designed to take beginners from the couch to finishing the Jingle Bell Beach Run on Sunday, Dec. 17 at Coconut Grove Marketplace. No prior running experience is necessary.
Runs will take place on Tuesday and Thursday at 5 p.m. and Saturday morning at 6:30 a.m., although runs can be completed individually as well.

LavaKids hosts Family Fun Runs
On Saturday, Oct. 21, LavaKids, in partnership with Club Rehab, will host its Family Fun Runs at 7 a.m. on Ane Keohokalole Highway beginning at the West Hawaii Civic Center. This is a free event and open to all ages.
The guest speakers will be local finishers of this past Saturday’s Ironman World Championship. They will give some tips for starting on the path to a healthy and active lifestyle.
Registration will take place at 7 a.m. followed by a keiki dash at 7:45 a.m.. The one-mile run/walk, 2-mile run/walk and 5k run/walk will begin at 7:55 a.m. This event is open to both keiki and adults. Games and supervision will be provided for keiki during the 5k for parents wanting to participate.

Makalei hosting Nine, Whine and Dine golf tourney
Makalei Golf Club is hosting the Nine, Wine and Dine “Golf for the Cure” tournament on Saturday, Oct. 21 in support of the Susan G. Komen Hawaii Breast Cancer Foundation.
The nine-hole, two-person scramble format tournament will have a 1:30 p.m. shotgun start with a $55 per person entry fee.

KVA hosts Volley-Boo Tournament
The Keauhou Volleyball Association is hosting a weekend-long, Halloween-themed volleyball tournament, with proceeds benefiting the Kona Community Hospital Cancer Treatment Center.
The Volley-Boo Tournament will be held Oct. 27, 28 and 29 on the Coconut Grove Marketplace sand court. The games, including Ghoul of the Beach (Kings of the Beach) and Co-Ed 4’s will start at 2 p.m. on Friday, and 9 a.m. on both Saturday and Sunday.
The KVA is donating a portion of the proceeds to the KCH Cancer Treatment Center in recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. KCH Cancer Center staff will be on-hand to provide breast cancer education information.
Join the fun at this family-friendly event. Teams will dress in pink during 2×2 games and in costumes during the 4×4 games.

Kona CC hosting fundraising golf tourney
The Kona Country Club will host a golf tournament to help raise money for the local women’s shelter on Oct. 29 starting at 8 a.m. Entry fee is $65 per person and registration will begin at 7 a.m. Entry fee includes golf, range, morning snack, heavy pupu and prizes. Entry deadline is Oct. 22.
BISA holding benefit golf tournament
Big Island Sports Academy will host the Challenge at the Big Island Country Club, a benefit golf tournament on Friday, Nov. 10. Proceeds will go to support sports career educational opportunities for boys and girls on the Big Island, which includes annual scholarships, career exploration camps, internships and workshops.
The tournament will have an 8 a.m. shotgun start with a $150 per person entry fee. Sponsorship opportunities are also available.

Free racewalking clinics will be held at Old Airport Park’s Makaeo Walking Path on Nov. 18 and Dec. 9 at 9 a.m. The lessons are provided by Stan Chraminski. For more information email stanski@twc.com.
HCC hosts Out-n-Back Training Time Trial
On Sunday, Nov. 19 the Hawaii Cycling Club will host the Out-n-Back Training Time Trial/Sunday Ride starting at 7 a.m.
This is the sixth annual 19.5 mile Out-n-Back Training Time Trial. A non-competitive Sunday Ride will start shortly after the last time trial competitor.
Registration is from 6:30 to 6:45 a.m. on Pukiawe Street off of Kaiminani Drive.
The Out-n-Back starts at Kaiminani Drice and Queen Kaahumanu Highway, then travels North 13.5 miles to the 80 mile marker, makes a U Turn and returns to the 86 mile marker.
This event is free to 2016/17 and 2017 Hawaii Cycling Club members. Non-members will pay a $10 one-day membership fee. he annual membership fee is $20.
Participants and volunteers will gather at The Talk Story aid station after the event for food and beverages.
