HONOLULU — About two dozen people helped contain a brush fire in South Kohala before firefighters arrived.
At about 5:35 p.m Sunday, firefighters responded to the brush fire on the makai side of Highway 19. The Hawaii County Fire Department said roughly 25 good Samaritans used soda, water from their water bottles and fire extinguishers to contain the fire until firefighters arrived.
Firefighters brought the fire under control at 5:45 p.m. and extinguished is at 6:15 p.m.
If it were not for the good Samaritans containing the fire, the fire department said the brush fire could’ve quickly spread toward Wailea and Puako because of strong tradewinds.
No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire is unknown at this time.
