Kahilu Theatre presents Fiber Craft Day next Saturday in Waimea. From 9 a.m.-1 p.m., members of the Hawaii Handweavers’ Hui will offer free hands-on demonstrations of weaving, knitting, braiding, macrame, spinning and looping.
The public is encouraged to participate, and all materials and equipment will be provided, including weaving looms and spinning wheels, marudai for Japanese braiding, yarns and threads for knitting, crocheting and looping.
Fiber Craft Day is being held in conjunction with Fiber Journeys of Hawaii Island, currently on display in the two galleries at Kahilu Theatre. The exhibition is on view through Oct. 22. The award winning works in the show are from the statewide Hawaii Handweavers’ Hui 2017 biennial juried exhibition held during September in Honolulu.
A number of Big Island weavers are represented in the show, including fiber artist Shannon Mathers, who is looking forward to Fiber Craft Day as an integral part of the exhibition in the galleries.
“It is rewarding to come together as a handweavers’ hui to engage with the community. We are very excited by
the interest our work generates and look forward to sharing our love of fiber art,” said Mathers.
In addition to activities and demonstrations, there will be a sale of handwoven items including rugs, scarves, shawls, placemats, runners, hand towels, bags, jewelry and other items made by members of the hui. A portion of the sale proceeds will support the Kahilu Theatre galleries program.
“One of our organization’s goals is to offer vibrant visual arts experiences that reflect the diverse talent in our community.” said Deb Goodwin, executive director of Kahilu Theatre. “Fiber Craft Day by the Hawaii Handweavers’ Hui is an opportunity for people of all ages to literally get ‘hands on’ with a wide variety of fiber techniques, assisted by the very best Big Island weavers!”
Kahilu Exhibits, the visual arts exhibition program of the Kahilu Theatre, presents solo and thematic group shows and features local and global works of art from both emerging and established artists. The galleries are free and open to the public 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Monday-Friday, as well as during all events.
