During October, the Waimea Arts Council is presenting its annual Helen M. Cassidy Memorial Juried Art Show at Firehouse Gallery.
The member show, now in its 33rd year, will be on exhibit today through Oct. 29 at Firehouse Gallery in Waimea. It features 26 entries, including paintings in all mediums, drawings, sculptures and photographs.
The show honors Helen Cassidy, who was instrumental in establishing the Waimea Arts Council more than 35 years ago.
This year’s invited juror is Kauanoe Chang, an Oahu native who has long been in the forefront of art and education. A student attracted to art from early on she eventually studied at the University of Hawaii at Manoa with many well-known artist/teachers before beginning her art-focused career with the Department of Education as a curriculum developer of the Hawaiian studies and arts education programs.
Since 2000, she’s resided in Waimea, serving as a support specialist assisting nine schools in the three northern districts of the island while also participating in a number of important art gatherings. Most recently she helped establish HOEA, a school for Native Hawaiian arts in South Kohala.
A reception will be held from 3-5 p.m. on Saturday at the gallery.
During the event, awards will be presented to the following artists:
