KBFD TV will be broadcasting its “Korean Legacy” series highlighting Korean Americans in Hawaii. This year, retired Chief Justice Ronald Moon and KBFD founder Kea Sung Chung will be interviewed. The program will air on Oct. 4, which is Chuseok (Korean Thanksgiving Day also known as Harvest Moon Festival) at 6:45 p.m.
Moon is well respected in the Korean American community as he was the first Korean American to become a chief justice of a state Supreme Court. He is also the descendant of the first immigrants to Hawaii; his grandfather came in 1903. Chung, KBFD TV founder, immigrated to Hawaii in 1972. He started broadcasting in black and white Korean national news in 1974 on a local channel leasing time weekly.
In 1986, he committed everything he had into starting KBFD TV, the first FCC licensed channel in the U.S. dedicated to Korean programming. Wanting to promote Korean culture in Hawaii, he decided to subtitle in English a few programs in 1988. Black and white programming became, color, digital then high definition. “Korean Legacy” will trace Korean American history in Hawaii through the lives of Moon and Chung.
