KAILUA-KONA — Fire crews have contained a brush fire that scorched 1,645 acres in Ka’u.
The blaze, which started in the Waikapuna Bay area, was discovered Thursday and has remained 100 percent contained for the past 36 hours, said Battalion Chief Mattias Kusch for Hawaii Fire Department in East Hawaii on Monday. There was no lightning in the area at the time it was discovered and the cause is still under investigation.
On Monday, county helicopters continued to do water drops and fire crews worked at the borders of the fire to keep it from expanding.
While the fire department considers the fire under control, Kusch said, it is a huge and long fire where crews will maintain a presence until the flames are extinguished.
The brush fire started in grazing lands and moved into native dry land forest.
“That is a shame because there’s not much of that left,” Kusch said of the Hawaiian forest.
Flames did get about 0.75 miles away from a home near the Green Sands Subdivision. Despite that, no evacuations were ordered. As of Monday, no structures or communities were threatened.
Kusch said crews are one good rain away from being done with the blaze.
