Suicide Talk with Keli Acquaro from Hawaii Island branch of the Hawaii Family Guidance Center will be from 1-2:30 p.m. Sept. 27. In Hawaii County there is a lot of knowledge of and experience with suicide. And there is much to learn that could help make the community safer from suicide. This can start by talking to each other. Suicide is preventable. Attend this meeting to learn what community members can do about this. Although this program is not intended to teach suicide intervention skills, ways to support a person at risk will be discussed, and other opportunities for learning about intervention will be offered.
How to Train Your Dragon Brain will be presented from 5:30-7 p.m. Sept. 27, hosted by with JoAnna Wyss, LCSW. Learn and practice a simple, relaxing, two-minute activity designed to train your brain’s response to stress and challenges. Decrease anxiety without drugs or alcohol and shift brain chemistry at will. Approach problems or challenges with whole brain capacities, not fight or flight.
Loving Yourself — A New Way will meet from 6-7:30 p.m. Sept. 28 with Libby Tao Kelson-Fulcher. We are trained from infancy to think and feel outside ourselves, focusing outwards on others. Often, without even realizing it, we go away from ourselves and get lost in the process. So this is an evening of returning to yourself in a palpable way. After the talk story, a simple process — that is especially effective with uncomfortable emotions and issues around physical pain — will be demonstrated. There will also be time for Q&A.
Chair Yoga meets from 9:30-10:30 a.m. every Friday with Michiko Sato, CYT. This gentle, yoga-in-a-chair practice is designed to stretch and strengthen the body without standing or lying on a mat. Class may also include some easy standing poses behind the chair.
Overeaters Anonymous is held from noon-1 p.m. every Friday. OA is a fellowship of individuals who, through shared experience, strength and hope, are recovering from compulsive eating and compulsive food behaviors. OA welcomes anyone who wishes to stop eating compulsively.
Scrabble Meetup gathers from 1:30-4 p.m. every Friday with Annabel Spielman. Word lovers of every age and skill level are encouraged to play this classic game with relaxed rules. Dictionary use is permitted. It’s a great way to retain and expand vocabulary, spelling, memory and observation skills in a congenial atmosphere.
