Blue Zones Project in West Hawaii officially launched Aug. 26 with a community event at Kona Commons in the old Sports Authority location, drawing a crowd of more than 1,500 people. This distinction completes the countywide effort to make healthy choices easier in all of Hawaii Island.
Complete with healthy, ono food, keiki activities, vendors and activities all afternoon, attendees were smiling and inspired to make healthier choices. The event also featured hula workshops, interactive Zumba, a downshift lounge and so many more fun activities.
Dan Buettner, Blue Zones’ founder and New York Times best-selling author of “The Blue Zones Solution,” gave the keynote address. He told his story about the research he did while traveling through the five Blue Zones and gave examples of how Blue Zones Project has worked in other communities across the country, as well as in Hawaii.
West Hawaii is excited to join the other Big Island communities in the Blue Zones Project effort to make the healthy choice the easy choice. Now a countywide initiative, we look forward to seeing a lot more blue around.
