KAILUA-KONA — Kristin Frost Albrecht will assume operational control of The Food Basket as interim executive director, the organization announced.

KAILUA-KONA — Kristin Frost Albrecht will assume operational control of The Food Basket as interim executive director, the organization announced.

Albrecht will replace former executive director En Young, who recently resigned his post.

Just because he’s leaving The Food Basket doesn’t mean Young is done fighting for food sustainability. He’s taken up a position as a general manager for a start-up that will employ modern techniques to greenhouse farming in an effort to increase productivity and provide more nutritious food for people in Hawaii, according to a release from The Food Basket.

During his four-year tenure, Young spearheaded the completion of the new Kona warehouse at the Ulu Wini Complex in Kailua-Kona. He also successfully implemented a SNAP-based CSA program to increase food sustainability.

“It has been such an honor to return home to Hawaii Island and put my energies toward assisting the community that made me who I am,” said Young.

“When I look at the way the staff carries themselves, when I hear feedback from the community, including clients and partner agencies, I know I have taken this agency as far as I could,” Young added. “I wish all the servants of The Food Basket’s continuing mission the very best, and am pleased to announce I will be continuing to attempt to fulfill my dream of an equitable food system in the private sector.”

Albrecht has worked with The Food Basket for nearly three years. Formerly, she served as director of public relations and events and is the current director of grants and compliance.

Albrecht has an extensive background with this type of work. She was the managing faculty in the Family and Community Health Department at Oregon State University’s Cooperative Extension Service. She has also served as executive director of the North Coast Food Web.

“The board of directors of The Food Basket bids a fond farewell to executive director En Young and a warm welcome to interim executive director Kristin Albrecht,” said Board Chair Rhea Lee-Moku. “The board of directors is confident that Albrecht will continue the growth and reach of The Food Basket.”
