Registration forms for GEMS 2017 have been delivered to all public and private schools serving fifth grade girls.
GEMS, Girls Exploring Math and Science, is a one-day event held each fall to encourage girls to pursue classes and careers in math and all sciences. Every fifth grade girl in West Hawaii is invited to attend, whether in public, charter, private, or home schooling. This year GEMS will take place on Nov. 9 at King Kamehameha’s Kona Beach Hotel in Kailua-Kona.
AAUW-Kona, with the help and support of the community, has hosted this event for more than two decades, serving as many as 325 girls per year. The deadline for postmarked forms is Sept. 15. Scholarships are available to any girl who can not pay the $20 registration fee.

Coordinated Services of the Elderly issues Senior ID cards
The Coordinated Services for the Elderly Program of the Elderly Activities Division will issue senior ID cards for those 60 and older at various West Hawaii sites during August.

HLTA presents $35K to Big Island homeless services agencies
The Hawaii Lodging and Tourism Association, in partnership with the Institute for Human Services and the County of Hawaii, presented $35,000 to two Hawaii Island nonprofit agencies focused on servicing homelessness.
The grants to HOPE Services of Hawaii Island and Hawaii Rise Foundation were presented on Thursday Waikoloa Beach Marriott Resort.
Through a matching grant, HLTA and IHS presented $20,000 to HOPE Services Hawaii Inc. to help fund its transitional housing program.
HLTA also presented $15,000 to support the Hawaii Rise Foundation, through the recommendation of Hawaii County Mayor Harry Kim. The funds will be used for a certified kitchen at Na Kahua Hale O Ulu Wini, also known as Ulu Wini, a low-income housing project built by the County of Hawaii in 2011 in Kona.
The grant presentations took place in conjunction with HLTA Hawaii Chapter’s Charity Walk grant allocation ceremony, in which nearly $276,000 was dispersed among 60 Hawaii County nonprofit organizations. The Charity Walk is an annual statewide fundraiser produced by the Hawaii Lodging and Tourism Association and the visitor industry which raises funds for various nonprofit agencies. The 2017 Charity Walk raised $2.27 million for more than 360 charities.
