WAIMEA — Kokua I Na Kula and has provided more than $2 million to Hawaii Island schools to improve the educational experience of its students.

Now through Sept. 19, when shoppers at KTA’s Waimea or Waikoloa locations buy participating products, points accumulated can be donated to their favorite school at checkout. Each product equals one point. Designated products are made by Kraft Heinz, Nabisco, Natural Directions, Hawaiian Sun, Kimberly-Clark, Frito Lay, Hershey, Pepsi, Hawaii Food Service Alliance, ConAgra Foods, Banana Boat and Kellogg’s.

North Hawaii schools that can benefit include Waimea Elementary and Middle School, Waimea Country School, Kanu o ka Aina, Hawaii Preparatory Academy and Parker in Waimea; Honokaa Elementary, High and Intermediate School; Waikoloa Elementary and Middle Schools; and Kohala Elementary, High and Middle Schools.

Schools can also earn additional points by “Volunteering Kokua for your Community” with The Food Basket or Recycle Hawaii. Each can of food donated to The Food Basket equals one Kokua I Na Kula Point. Each piece of discarded mylar — shiny plastic candy wrappers or chip bags — redeemed for recycling equals one Kokua I Na Kula point.

Final Kokua i Na Kula point standings and percentages will be announced in November and the total funds will be awarded to schools in January 2018.
