KAILUA-KONA — Two people are facing charges in connection with a burglary and jewel theft in Waimea last month.
On July 31, South Kohala officers responded to a reported burglary at a Waimea home, where they learned that someone entered the residence and took several pieces of jewelry, including opal, emerald, gold and diamond pieces.
Detectives, assisted by the the FBI’s violent crimes task force and Honolulu Police Department, learned that one item was being advertised for sale online and on Aug. 11, police arrested the alleged seller, 40-year-old Stryder Scalf, of Kailua-Kona. He was charged with theft in the second-degree after reportedly being observed in possession of a stolen piece.
Through the continued investigation, police reportedly determined that a second man, Randen Tabac, 25 of Honokaa, was allegedly in possession of “numerous stolen jewelry pieces,” taken from the earlier burglary. Detectives found the man at a residence in Laupahoehoe on Aug. 15. He was arrested and charged with theft in the first degree.
Scalf’s bail was set at $10,000 and he was held at the Kealakehe Police Station cell block pending a court appearance on Monday. During that hearing, Scalf requested a preliminary hearing, which was slated for Wednesday.
On Wednesday, he waived his right to a preliminary hearing sending the case to 3rd Circuit Court for further proceedings. According to court records, he currently faces charges of second-degree theft, third-degree promoting a detrimental drug, possessing drug paraphernalia, and two counts of third-degree promoting a dangerous drug.
Tabac’s bail was set at $0 and he was held at the Hilo Police Station cell block pending a court appearance on Monday. During that hearing, the court granted the state’s request to set bail at $1 million and denied a defense motion to have Tabac released on his own recognizance. A preliminary hearing began Thursday and will continue on Aug. 21.
