KAILUA-KONA — Seventeen motorists were arrested for driving under the influence of an intoxicant during the week of Aug. 7-13, police reported Tuesday.
KAILUA-KONA — Seventeen motorists were arrested for driving under the influence of an intoxicant during the week of Aug. 7-13, police reported Tuesday.
Eleven of those arrests were made in Kona, four in South Hilo, one in Puna and one in South Kohala.
Three of the drivers were involved in a traffic accident and two of the drivers were under the age of 21, according to Hawaii Police.
So far this year, there have been 706 DUI arrests compared with 657 during the same period last year.
According to police statistics, there have been 813 major accidents so far this year with 883 during the same period last year, a decrease of 7.9 percent.
According to police, there has been an increase in fatal crashes by 53.8 percent and an increase in fatalities at 46.7 percent.
To date, there were 20 fatal crashes, which resulted in in 22 fatalities. Compared to last year, there were 13 fatal crashes, which resulted in 15 fatalities.
