AARP Hawaii is holding a free “Think of Your Future” workshop on Aug. 26 in Kailua-Kona. The workshop runs from 9 a.m. to noon at the West Hawaii Civic Center.
No individual advice will be given and no products or services promoted or sold. The workshop is just about helping people plan for retirement and you don’t have to be an AARP member to attend. The following sessions are included in the workshop: “10 Steps to Get Ready for Retirement, “Understanding Your Social Security Retiree Benefits” and “Medicare 101.”

Powerful Tools
for Caregivers classes start Aug. 26
To help family caregivers cope with the demands of caring for their loved ones with chronic medical conditions, Hawaii Community Caregiver Network is sponsoring free Powerful Tools for Caregivers classes.
Beginning Aug. 26 and continuing every Saturday until Sept. 30, the classes will be held from 10 a.m. to noon at Kona Adult Day Center, 81-989 Halekii St., in Kealakekua.
During the series, family caregivers will learn self-care tools to: reduce personal stress; change negative self-talk; communicate their needs to family members and health care or service providers; communicate more effectively in challenging situations; recognize messages in their emotions, deal with difficult feelings; and make tough caregiving decisions.
A $25 deposit for course materials will be collected at the first class and refunded upon completion of the six-week series. Participants who complete the series will receive The Caregiver Helpbook at no charge. Advance registration is required by calling Loli Paranada at 936-6499.
Daifukuji Soto Mission holding open house
Daifukuji Soto Mission, a Zen Buddhist temple with a history of 103 years, invites the public to an open house at 10 a.m.-1 p.m. on Aug. 20.
Featured will be temple tours, Zen meditation and art, games and activities, door prizes, and ukulele, tai chi, and taiko performances. The snack shop and gift shop will be open.
The temple is located at 79-7241 Mamalahoa Highway, next to Teshima’s restaurant in Honalo.
