Joseph Cruz Velez Sr., 93, of Hilo, died July 18, 2017, at his residence. Born in Kohala, he was a retired truck driver for Hamakua Sugar Co. and a retired owner of Velez Farms in Honokaa.
Friends may call at 5 p.m. on Aug. 3 at Dodo Mortuary chapel for a 5 p.m. service. Friends may also call at 11 a.m. on Aug. 4 at Mauna Kea Memorial Park in Papaikou for a graveside committal service. The family requests that casual attire be worn.

Marta Platino Duterte, 75, of Holualoa, died June 25, 2017, at Kona Community Hospital. Born Sept. 5, 1941, in Alicia, Bohol, Philippines, she was a homemaker and member of St. John’s Catholic Church.

Bruce Herbert Harrison, 64, of Waikoloa, died July 17, 2017, at North Hawaii Community Hospital. Born Oct. 7, 1952, in Baltimore, he was resident manager for Elima Lani Complex in Waikoloa.

John L. Gardner, 91, of Willow Street, Pennsylvania and formerly of Kailua-Kona, died July 22, 2017. Born July 9, 1926, in Santa Rosa, California, he was a retired installer with Western Electric, U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, Civil Air Patrol pilot, Ham radio operator, Youth With A Mission volunteer, and served with the Hawaii Red Cross by setting up radio communications during emergencies and disasters.

Onesimo Valorozo Arellano, 80, of Kailua-Kona, died July 21, 2017, at Kona Community Hospital. Born Nov. 22, 1936, in Magsingal, Ilocos Sur, Philippines, he was a houseman at the Royal Kona Resort and member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church.
