Joseph Velez Sr.
Joseph Cruz Velez Sr., 93, of Hilo, died July 18, 2017, at his residence. Born in Kohala, he was a retired truck driver for Hamakua Sugar Co. and a retired owner of Velez Farms in Honokaa.
Friends may call at 5 p.m. on Aug. 3 at Dodo Mortuary chapel for a 5 p.m. service. Friends may also call at 11 a.m. on Aug. 4 at Mauna Kea Memorial Park in Papaikou for a graveside committal service. The family requests that casual attire be worn.
He is survived by wife, Maria Margarita Velez, of Hilo; sons, Joseph Velez Jr., of Hilo, Daniel Velez, of Pismo Beach, California, and David Velez, of Honokaa; step-son, Alvin Tangalin, of Keaau; daughters, Silvia Velez Conn, of Honokaa, and Evelyn Velez, of Hilo; step-daughters, Annie Tangalin Lara, of San Diego, and Angelica Tangalin, of Keaau; sister, Janet Velez Branco, of Paauilo; grandchildren; great-grandchildren; and nieces, nephews and cousins.

Marta Duterte
Marta Platino Duterte, 75, of Holualoa, died June 25, 2017, at Kona Community Hospital. Born Sept. 5, 1941, in Alicia, Bohol, Philippines, she was a homemaker and member of St. John’s Catholic Church.
Friends may call at 5 p.m. on Aug. 4 at St. John’s Catholic Church in Kealakekua for a prayer service. Friends may also call at 8 a.m. on Aug. 5 at the church for a 10 a.m. mass; burial to follow at Kona Memorial Park in Holualoa. The family requests casual attire be worn. Flowers are welcome.
She is survived by sons, Anastacio (Morlina Abangan) Duterte Jr. and Fidel Duterte, both of Holualoa; and two grandsons.

Bruce Harrison
Bruce Herbert Harrison, 64, of Waikoloa, died July 17, 2017, at North Hawaii Community Hospital. Born Oct. 7, 1952, in Baltimore, he was resident manager for Elima Lani Complex in Waikoloa.
Friends may call at 5:30 p.m. on Aug. 4 at Waikoloa Community Church for a 6 p.m. celebration of life and service. In lieu of flowers, the family asks memorial donations be made to Waikoloa Community Church.
He is survived by wife, Kristine Harrison, of Waikoloa; father, Charles Harrison, of Floria; brother, Craig Harrison, of Fort Collins, Colorado; and nieces, nephews and cousins.

Herbert Hiromitsu Mizuire, 83, of Hilo, died July 18, 2017, at Hospice of Hilo Pohai Malama Care Center. Born in Pepeekeo, he was a retired mechanic for J&J Auto & Body Repair, U.S. Army veteran and member of Door of Faith Church in Hilo.

John Gardner
John L. Gardner, 91, of Willow Street, Pennsylvania and formerly of Kailua-Kona, died July 22, 2017. Born July 9, 1926, in Santa Rosa, California, he was a retired installer with Western Electric, U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, Civil Air Patrol pilot, Ham radio operator, Youth With A Mission volunteer, and served with the Hawaii Red Cross by setting up radio communications during emergencies and disasters.

Onesimo Arellano
Onesimo Valorozo Arellano, 80, of Kailua-Kona, died July 21, 2017, at Kona Community Hospital. Born Nov. 22, 1936, in Magsingal, Ilocos Sur, Philippines, he was a houseman at the Royal Kona Resort and member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church.
A three-day vigil will be held at 5 p.m. on Aug. 2 at 77-6519 Seaview Circle in Kailua-Kona. Friends may call at 10:30 a.m. on Aug. 5 at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Kailua-Kona for a 12:30 p.m. Mass. Burial to follow at Kona Memorial Park in Holualoa. Kiyoko Burton, 97, of Paauhau, died May 28, 2017, at her residence. Born in Pohakea, she was a retired farm laborer for Hirako Farms and member of the Honokaa United Methodist Church.

Fannie K. (Kaiawe) Duhaylongsod, 84, of Kealakekua, died April 24, 2017. Born March 19, 1933, in Kahaluu, she was retiree from the State of Hawaii.
