Gallery hosts Alex Gupton, Brad ‘Tiki Shark’ Parker
The Kona Oceanfront Gallery hosts Alex Gupton and Brad “Tiki Shark” Parker this evening.
Part of the Hot Summer Show Nights, the free event runs from 5-9 p.m. at the gallery located in Waterfront Row in Kailua Village. Attendees will have the chance to meet with the artists as well as see their new works. Gupton will be unveiling his latest limited edition, “Watching Over You,” a 38-by-30-inch artist proof. Parker will unveil his latest releases, “Kapu Beach,” featuring Elvis and “The Menehune’s Only Come Out at Night.”
The series runs through August with different artists featured each month. Each event also includes wine, cheese and refreshments.

Carl Villaverde, Joanie Collins take stage
Carl Villaverde and Joanie Collins will perform from 6:30-8:30 p.m. this evening at the HUB Pub Restaurant in Hawi.
Villaverde and Collins teamed up in 1996 to become Mango, one of Hawaii’s premiere music groups. Since 2002, they have taken their music and aloha to audiences around the world.

Summer Fest benefits hospital foundation
Bad Papa and Lorenzo’s Army will highlight Summer Fest 2017, a benefit for the Kohala Hospital Charitable Foundation, on Saturday in North Kohala.
Summer Fest 2017 runs 1-5 p.m. at Kahua Ranch, which is located off Kohala Mountain Road. Proceeds from the celebration will support the foundation’s current campaign to create a hospital serenity garden for patients and visitors. Tickets are $60 and can be purchased by calling Helen at 494-0050.
Tickets include lunch and two drinks, and are available from Betty Meinardus at elsbeth@meinard.us, Mother’s Antiques and Fine Cigars in Hawi, or from any KHCF board member. Foundation members can deliver tickets or send them by mail.
“Bad Papa,” made of up of Jammin Joe Buck and Bob Bojorquez, recently released its debut album “Searchin’ For Surf,” a masterfully crafted 12-song instrumental CD.
Buck is a blind music recording artist, songwriter and performer who plays many instruments, including guitar, bass, drums, ukulele, horns and vocals, and music styles, as well. Bojorquez has been playing and writing music for over 50 years. Moving to Hawaii was a great musical experience and he fell in love with the rhythmic and melodic sound of Hawaiian slack key music.
Lorenzo’s Army is led by Larry Roppolo and plays rock and pop jams.

WCT presents last performance of ‘Rendezvous’
Waimea Community Theatre’s first variety show, “Rendezvous,” will be performed for a final time on Saturday at Kahilu Theatre.
Curtains lift at 8 p.m. for the finale. Tickets are $25 and can be purchased online at www.kahilutheatre.org or www.waimeacommunitytheatre.org.
The show is jointly produced by WCT, Airmaid Productions, and Lorenzo’s Army. Billed as an adult show, geared for those 16 years old and up, “Rendezvous” thrills audiences with live music, aerial burlesque and two short adult plays.
Waimea Community Theatre’s next production is “Pippin,” from Stephen Schwartz, creator of “Wicked” and “Godspell,” running Aug. 11-13 at Honokaa People’s Theatre and Aug. 18-20 at Kahilu Theatre. “Pippin” is a classic musical that follows Prince Pippin as he tries to find his corner of the sky.

Katchi katchi concert at the HUB
The Kohala Village HUB Barn hosts a fundraising event featuring Puerto Rican music by El Leo, The Jarican Express, food and dancing from 7-9:30 p.m. on Saturday in Hawi.
The event is taking place as a fundraiser for the HUB’s programs. Donations support the HUB’s nonprofit Feed Hawaii community programs. Feed Hawaii’s mission is to feed the community through food, arts, culture and ecology.
Tickets are $10 tickets are available for purchase at the HUB’s front desk. The price increases to $15 at the door. The HUB is located at 55-514 Hawi Road.

Celebrate a Kona sunset with live music, hula
Hawaiian Sunset Saturday launches this weekend at Coconut Grove Marketplace in Kailua Village.
The once a month free community event celebrates Kona’s spectacular sunsets with live Hawaiian music and hula starting at 5:30 pm on the lawn of the marketplace, located off Alii Drive. It will be held the last Saturday of every month.
Attendees should bring lawn chairs or beach mats. Parking is available at the marketplace. Coolers are not permitted.

Ensemble plans concerts
Ohrlando’s Chamber Ensemble offers a pair of summer concerts next weekend.
Joining Roland Maurer on English horn and bassoon and Ursula Hesse on piano will be David Turner and Diane Maltester, both on clarinet. Concerts are slated at 4:30 p.m. on Aug. 5 at Holo Holo Ku Gatehouse in Waimea and at 4 p.m. on Aug. 6 at a private residence in Kailua-Kona.
The program features a collection of colorful, easy listening compositions: “A Partita” by Johann Nepomuk Hummel, a divertimento trio by Johann Baptist Vanhal, variations by Ludwig van Beethoven, a neoclassical trio by the Australian composer Alfred Hill and more.

LEGO Batman movie to be shown
Honokaa Public Library will offer a free screening of the LEGO Batman Movie from 4-6 p.m. on Monday.
Gotham City is changing, and if our favorite superhero Batman wants to save his city from the evil Joker’s plans of taking over the city, he may need to work with others, mainly his superhero sidekick Robin. He might even learn to relax a little and learn something from his newest sidekick and his trusty friend Alfred.
This film is rated PG; children must be accompanied by an adult.

Colored pencil workshop Aug. 5
The Classroom at Akamai Art Supply hosts the “Magic of Colored Pencil” workshop on Aug. 5 in Kailua-Kona.
During the workshop, which starts at 10 a.m., participants will discover the magic of colored pencils, especially Prismacolor pencils with Faith Rockenstein. Covered will be the different techniques that can be used to bring vibrancy to art in this one-day workshop open to students of all abilities ages 14 and up. Cost is $150, in addition to a $20 material fee.

Nakamoto leads jewelry making program
Jewelry artist Sid Nakamoto will offer two sessions of his popular jewelry making program on Aug. 7 at North Kohala Public Library in Kapaau.
The sessions will be held at 2 and 6 p.m. Materials are donated by the artist and the Friends of the North Kohala Library for participants to create their own jewelry piece.
Due to the popularity of Nakamoto’s jewelry workshops, a limit has been placed on the number of participants. Call the library to register.

Flameworking workshop offered
Volcano Art Center is expanding its offerings of glass art workshops with “Flameworking — An Introductory Class” on Aug. 12-13 and Aug. 19-20 in Volcano Village.
From 1-3 p.m. on each of the days, instructor Nash Adams-Pruitt, who specializes in functional glass art will teach the regions of the flame and heat base for a solid foundation from which to build flameworking skills. He will lead the class in creating sphere forms and pendants.
During the workshop, participants will complete their own finished design. It is designed for the student who has never touched a torch.
Flameworking, also known as lampworking or torchworking, is a type of glasswork whereby the artist utilizes a torch or lamp to melt the glass. Once in a molten state, the glass is blown and shaped with tools and hand movements, forming beads, figurines, or other similar miniature artwork.
Cost is $75 for VAC members and $80 for nonmembers, in adition to a $20 supply fee.
