Left did plenty of good

Left did plenty of good

Poor Jim Higgins (WHT July 1) must be even older than I am. Blowing the horn for “conservatives,” he blames the last eight years on leftists, “After eight years of leftist rule, shouldn’t we all be in Utopia?”

And then he asks, “please give us the examples in history where leftist policies have actually succeeded.”

I find it hard to believe that Jim has already forgotten that the day President Barack Obama was elected, GOP Mitch McConnell said his priority was to make him a one-term president. That didn’t work out but McConnell has led the conservative GOP into forming the most “do nothing” Congress in memory. The conservatives ignored their constitutional mandate to even hold a hearing, for goodness sake, to fill a Supreme Court vacancy, then for the first time in our history reduced the bar for the approval of a justice to a simple majority. It is very hard to pass legislation when the other folks won’t even sit down and talk with you.

And as for “leftist policies (that) have actually succeeded,” Jim must be brain dead to not recall the New Deal, the Truman Doctrine, the Marshall Plan, the GI Bill, Medicare, Medicaid, the Civil Rights Act, etc.

But being a strong conservative, Jim can of course point to all the wonderful legislation and solution to the nation’s problems that the conservatives — with control of the House, Senate and presidency — have accomplished in the Trump administration. Keep up the good work, Jim.
