KAILUA-KONA — Police are looking for a 37-year-old man wanted in connection to a reported attempted murder incident in the Ka‘u area that left one man injured, authorities said Tuesday.

The alleged assault occurred Monday when two men traveling in a car in the area of Wood Valley in Pahala got into an altercation.

Nathan Cakin is wanted in connection to the incident.

Authorities identified the men as acquaintances. The victim and driver were the only occupants in the vehicle at the time of the alleged assault, said Lt. Sherry Bird, with the Hawaii Police Department.

The victim and passenger, identified as a 38-year-old Ka‘u man, told police he was assaulted while in the vehicle. Once the vehicle came to stop, the suspect, identified as the driver, brandished a firearm and one gunshot was fired, according to a press release from Hawaii police.

“The suspect assaulted the victim with the firearm and then used an edged weapon to continue the assault,” the release states.

Officials state the victim was able to flee the area on foot and was treated and released from the hospital for injuries suffered in the alleged attack.

Bird said the victim had lacerations about his body.

Cakin is described as a Filipino man, 5 feet and 9 inches tall, 220 pounds, with black hair and brown eyes.

Police say Cakin may be in possession of a firearm and should be considered dangerous.

Anyone with information on Cakin’s whereabouts is asked to call authorities at 935-3311. Information can also be passed to Det. Dominic Uyetake of the Area II Criminal Investigation Section at 326-4646 ext. 228 or by email at dominic.uyetake@hawaiicounty.gov.
