AARP Smart Driver class planned
An AARP Smart Driver class is offered at 1 p.m July 31 at the Palisades Recreation Center on Kaiminani Drive.
This class is geared toward the older driver. It does not include driving or written tests, only informative quizzes. It covers subjects that may affect drivers as they age, such as hearing, eyesight, reflexes, safety rules, road rage, rules of the road, and problems at intersections.
Participants may receive a discount on their insurance.
Registration is required. Class size is limited.

BIFCU awards more than $10K in scholarships
Big Island Federal Credit Union recently awarded scholarships to seven Big Island high school students.
The 2017 $2,500 scholarship recipients are Callie Oyama (Hilo High School) and Kiaria Zoi Nakamura (Waiakea High School). The $1,000 scholarship recipients are Shariah Olomua (Kamehameha Schools Hawaii), Alaka’i Iaea-Russell (Ke Kula ‘O Nawahiokalani’opu’u), Victoria Rapoza (Hilo High School), Sunny Sakai (Hilo High School) and Chaden Shimaoka-Bello (Kamehameha Schools Hawaii).
The Scholarship Committee reviewed and scored all applicants based on academic excellence, personal achievements, community involvement, academic and career goals and letters of recommendation.
Learn lau hala weaving July 21
Traditional techniques of lau hala weaving will be taught July 21 at Christ Church Episcopal in Kealakekua.
Participants in the 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. event will complete a bracelet, as well as learn the history and culture behind the hala tree. Cost is $20. Attendees are asked to bring a hand towel.
