Auditions opening for Original Play Festival
Aloha Performing Arts Company has announced open auditions for volunteer actor / readers for its 24th annual Original Play Festival.
Eight plays with a total of over 30 characters will be cast by five directors during two audition sessions: July 8 and 9. Both will be from 2-5 p.m. each day. Auditions will take place in Damron Hall, APAC’s alternate rehearsal site, adjacent to the Aloha Theatre parking lot in Kainaliu.
Auditions will consist of readings from the scripts, which are available for onsite perusal at the APAC office starting Monday. The plays will be presented in staged reading format, with simple technical presentation and actors holding scripts. Memorization is not required, and newcomers are encouraged to audition. Roles are available for teens, adults, and senior citizens.
OPF XXIV will be presented Aug. 16-19 at Aloha Theatre.
Each play will rehearse once a week, on the same day of the week as its performance, for a total of five rehearsals. Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday rehearsals will be 6-9 p.m. and Saturday’s rehearsals will be 4-7 p.m. Rehearsals begin July 12. The entire rehearsal schedule will be posted at auditions.

Glitter gala at Kahilu Theatre

Mime classics with Todd Farley
The show will be from 11-11:45 a.m. at Thelma Parker Memorial Library in Waimea, free.
Todd Farley is a master mime and physical theater specialist. He will showcase some of mime’s more enduring charm of illusion and wonder. Children will be able to see the common illusions of the wall, walk, robot and other object manipulations seen in the context of classic children’s tales. This 45-minute program is suitable for ages 5-13. Young children must be accompanied by a parent or adult caregiver.
Movie Mondays
Family film nights at North Kohala Public Library, Kapaau will be at 6 p.m. every Monday. Enjoy a family film, all are rated PG, and open to ages 5 and older.
Monday will be “Kubo &the Two Strings.”

The movie will be from 4-6 p.m. Monday at Honokaa Public Library, free.

Bonsai display at Wailoa Center
The Mokuhonua Bonsai Club, along with the Hilo Bonsai Kyoshitsu, invites the public to its display today and Saturday at the Wailoa Center, 200 Piopio St. in Hilo. This year marks the 50th anniversary of the Wailoa Center.
The Bonsai display hours are 11 a.m.-7 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.
Come and enjoy the variety and beauty of bonsai, ikebana, and suiseki displays and talk story with club members who will be available to answer questions. This event is free and open to the public.

Kilauea Drama &Entertainment presents its 15th Annual Summer Musical
Kilauea Drama &Entertainment Network (KDEN) presents “Finian’s Rainbow” as its 15th Annual Summer Musical. The show will run July 7–23 with performances at 7 :30 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays and 2:30 p.m. Sundays at KMC’s Kilauea Theater.
Opening on Broadway in 1947 with music by Burton Lane and lyrics by E.Y. “Yip” Harburg (who wrote the lyrics for “The Wizard of Oz”), “Finian’s Rainbow” generated one pop classic after another-“How Are Things in Glocca Morra?” “Old Devil Moon,” and “Look to The Rainbow.”
Tickets are $20 general, $15 for seniors 60 plus and students and $12 for children 12 and under. Tickets are available at Kilauea General Store, Keaau Natural Foods, and the Most Irresistible Shop in Hilo and at the door.

Tickets on sale for United Way’s Evening in Paradise with Kalani Pea
Tickets are on sale for two events during Hawaii Island United Way’s biggest weekend of fundraising for the year. Proceeds from these events support 48 human service programs delivered by Hawaii Island United Way’s 38 partner agencies islandwide. These services touch three quarters of the island’s residents.
On July 7, join the United Way for an evening with Hawaii Island’s Grammy award-winner Kalani Pea.
Kalani’s debut album, “E Walea,” quickly topped the charts on iTunes, and was recognized with the Grammy for Best Regional Roots Music Album and the Na Hoku Hanohano Award for Contemporary Album of the Year. Enjoy a gourmet dinner and cocktails while Kalani serenades the crowd with his contemporary Hawaiian soul stylings. Tickets are $175.
On July 8, join the island’s finest chefs at Evening In Paradise, a gourmet grazing evening with ono food, live entertainment by Vaughn Valentino, and a silent auction with donations from an array of local businesses.
