Public Library expands hours
Kealakekua Public Library has added 10 more hours to its public service schedule and will now be open on Thursdays.
The library’s hours were reduced twice since 2000 because of budget cuts, and in 2009 the library was threatened with closure. The community successfully rallied to keep the library open.
In February, staff tracked library usage and conducted a patron survey, with the majority choosing the new Monday through Friday schedule.
The library’s new hours are from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday, from noon to 7 p.m. Wednesday, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday and from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday. It is closed Saturday and Sunday.

Youth mural project begins today
Manini Holdings and Donkey Mill Art Center will host a youth public art mural project this week on Pawai Place. Youth artists will be guided by community mural artists Ira Stivers and Eugene Menor to create a pueo mural representing creativity, collaboration, inspiration and community. The canvas will be a 400-foot temporary construction fence featuring the spray paint art. Youth ages 13-18 will work from 4-10 p.m. today and Friday, with the finished mural showcasing at 6 p.m. Saturday at the Kona Town Night Market at the Brewery Block.
Sale of beach
items will benefit Hospice of Kona
Hospice of Kona’s Memory Lane Thrift Store will have a booth on Saturday at Kona Town Night Market at Brewery Block in Kona.
Discounted, gently-used beach items including boogie boards, coolers, toys and beach chairs will be on sale. Proceeds benefit Hospice of Kona’s residential hospice home, Nakamaru Hale. The Memory Lane Thrift Store is located at 75-5745 Kuakini Highway.
Kona Town Night Market is a free event with vendors, artists, food and a beer garden.

Blood may also be donated from 8:45 a.m. to 5:15 p.m. July 6 and from 7 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. July 7 at the Church of Jesus Christ and Latter-day Saints Kona Stake Center Cultural Hall
