Hospice seeks beach items for fundraiser
Got beach items? Hospice of Kona’s Memory Lane Thrift Store is seeking gently used boogie boards, noodles, coolers, kids sand toys and beach chairs for a summer fundraiser. All proceeds will benefit Hospice of Kona’s residential hospice home, Nakamaru Hale.
Donations may be made to Memory Lane Thrift Store, 75-5745 Kuakini Highway, where the old 7-11 used to be. Info: 326-9293. The fundraiser will be announced later this month.
Nakamaru Hale provides a comforting and compassionate home-like setting for hospice patients who need an alternative to home care.

Applications sought for community development grants
The U.S. Department of Agriculture is inviting applications for grants to support economic development in rural communities.
The grants are available under the Rural Community Development Initiative program to strengthen the rural economy. Qualified intermediary organizations receiving Rural Community Development Initiative grants will provide technical assistance and training to help nonprofit organizations and communities develop their capacity to undertake housing, community facilities or economic development projects.
Applicants must have capacity-building experience for these types of projects and must provide matching funds at least equal to the grant. Grants range from $50,000 to $250,000.
Eligible recipients are nonprofit organizations, low-income rural communities or federally recognized tribes. Grants are not provided directly to businesses or individuals.

Court interpreter training coming up
The state Judiciary is seeking individuals who speak English and another language to become court interpreters. Applications are being accepted for a basic orientation workshop for new court interpreters in Hilo.
The workshop is from 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. June 15, 16 at the Hilo Courthouse, 777 Kilauea Avenue. Cost is $95 per person. Registration deadline is today.
Completion of the two-day workshop is the mandatory first step for interpreters seeking to become qualified state court interpreters for the Hawaii State Judiciary.
Registration forms are available on the Judiciary’s website and from the Office on Equality and Access to the Courts, 539-4860 or OEAC@courts.hawaii.gov.
The next orientation workshops will be held in February or March of 2018.
