Konawaena track and field standout Josiah Vallez is this week’s West Hawaii Today Athlete of the Week.

Vallez was apart of the Wildcat boys’ 4×400 relay team that won a gold medal at the HHSAA state meet at Keaau on Saturday.

The relay team of Vallez, Kala’i Santiago, Hauoli Akau and Reyson Ching won the 4×400 with a stadium record breaking time of 3 minutes and 23.21 seconds.

Vallez also finished third in the 800-meter dash with a time of 2:00.13.

The Wildcats placed second overall with 40 points, trailing only Punahou (120).

The previous week, Vallez edged out teammate Lawrence Barrett for a gold medal in the 800 during the BIIF championships.

Barrett finished second at the state meet.
