KAILUA-KONA — U.S. Army officials on Tuesday identified the 36-year-old man who died Sunday in a single-vehicle crash at the intersection of Daniel K. Inouye and Mamalahoa highways in South Kohala.
Sgt. Terrence Hinton was a passenger in a tractor-trailer truck hauling a piece of heavy equipment that crashed into a guardrail and overturned into a culvert at the intersection about 7:30 a.m. Sunday. Hinton, a native of Grand Rapids, Michigan, was assigned to the 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division at Schofield Barracks.
Hinton served as a motor transport operator. He enlisted in the Army in 2009 and previously served at Fort Campbell, Kentucky, moving to Hawaii in 2016. Hinton also deployed twice, once to Afghanistan in 2010 and once to Kuwait in 2014, a total of 21 months.
“We offer our deepest condolences to Sgt. Hinton’s family and friends and will keep them in our thoughts and prayers,” said Maj. Gen. Christopher Cavoli, Commander of the 25th Infantry Division, in a press release. “It is a tragedy and a sad day when we lose one of our soldiers.”
Police say the driver, a 20-year-old soldier, lost control of the big rig as it descended westbound on Daniel K. Inouye Highway, and then attempted to negotiate a left turn onto Mamalahoa Highway, or upper road, but was unable to do so.
The driver was identified by the U.S. Army as Pfc. Marcus Smith. Officials said he transported to North Hawaii Community Hospital where was treated for minor injuries and released.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
