Soroptimist meet Tuesday

Soroptimist International of Kona will meet from 5:30-7 p.m Tuesday in the West Hawaii Community Health Center conference room.

Nonmembers are welcome. RSVP to Paula at 329-3403.

Established in 1971, Soroptimist International of Kona is a service club working locally and globally, to make a difference in the lives of women and children through programs and projects.

Hawaii Tropical Fruit Growers meet

The West Hawaii chapter of Hawaii Tropical Fruit Growers meets from 6-9 p.m. Friday.

Special guest Jim West from Ecuador will discuss some of his 600 tropical fruit species. West lived in Kona almost 40 years ago before moving to Ecuador and starting his collection.

Nonmembers are welcome. All are encouraged to bring fruit for sharing.

Leigh joins HCFCU as human resource manager

Hawaii Community Federal Credit Union has hired Samantha Leigh as its human resources manager. She will be responsible for the human resources and training departments, and will oversee the credit union’s performance management, employee relations and service excellence.

Leigh worked for Roberts Hawaii as human resource generalist and the Sheraton Kona Resort and Spa as human resource coordinator. She plans to complete her Senior Professional in Human Resources training and certification in 2017.

Konawaena Middle School plans Curriculum Showcase Spectacular

Konawaena Middle school invites the community to its third annual Curriculum Showcase Spectacular.

There’ll be a talent show, student work exhibits, an unveiling of a new mural and a light dinner. Attendees are invited to celebrate all of the talents, hard work and accomplishments of the students this year.

The event is from 5:30-8 p.m. Friday in the school cafeteria. Those interested should make reservations through their child’s advisory teacher.

Lauhala bracelet weaving class planned

Attendees of a lauhala bracelet weaving class will learn the varied traditional uses for each part of the hala tree, including how to gather and prepare leaves for weaving. They will also create their own bracelet.

The class is from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday at Christ Church Episcopal on Konawaena School Road just mauka of Highway 11.
