Daifukuji Soto Mission holds bazaar

Daifukuji Soto Mission will hold its annual Building Fund Bazaar from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday, May 7.

The bazaar features plants, produce, household items, food, clothing, books, toys, massages, a silent auction and performances by Kona Daifukuji Taiko. The snack shop, gift shop and massage room will open at 8 a.m.

The historic Buddhist temple is at 79-7241 Mamalahoa Highway next to Teshima’s Restaurant in Honalo.

NARFE meeting coming up

National Active and Retired Federal Employees Kailua-Kona Chapter 1802 meets at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Mai grille in Waikoloa Beach Resort.

All active and retired federal employees and spouses are invited. Attendees will learn what NARFE is doing to help protect earned benefits.

Kona Hiroshima Kenjin Kai celebrates 50th anniversary

Kona Hiroshima Kenjin Kai will celebrate its 50th anniversary on May 8 with a luncheon at the Sheraton Kona Report and Spa at Keauhou Bay. Hiroshima Prefectural Gov. Hidehiko Yuzaki, chairman of the Prefectural Assembly, Shin Uda and 13 other representatives will be guests at the celebration.

The purpose of the Kenjin Kai is to recognize and preserve the culture of the Hiroshima Ken in Japan and perpetuate the relationship between Hiroshima and the Kenjin Kai. The Kenjin Kai is able to continue this relationship by participating in programs like this luncheon as well as an international cultural student exchange program sponsored by the Hiroshima Prefectural Government.

Also to be honored are the issei who took the first steps to leave Japan, and the group’s first president, Isoo Kato, who was interned during World War II. Gov. Yuzaki will also recognize retired board member Gladys Nanbu as she celebrates her beju (88th) birthday and board members George Harai, Shirley Matsuoka, Roy Honda, Helen Nagata and Claudia Chang.

Chamber seeks Pualu Award nominations

The Kona-Kohala Chamber of Commerce is seeking nominations of West Hawaii individuals, businesses and nonprofit organizations for its 14th annual Pualu Awards.

The chamber recognizes leaders in the community for various categories including community education, environmental awareness, business innovation, lifetime service, culture and heritage, visitor industry marketing and chamber member of the year.

Companies and organizations can nominate others or themselves but must provide specific and concrete examples of how nominees made a difference in West Hawaii. Submissions must also include two letters of recommendation. Applications must be received by 4 p.m. May 31.

The Pualu Awards will be presented at the chamber’s Annual Installation and Awards Luncheon June 30 at the Four Seasons Resort Hualalai.
