Legendary fusion belly dancer and visionary choreographer Myra Krien and her dance company will be featured Sunday during The Spice Box Dinner Show, Dance Party and Gypsy Night Market in Kailua-Kona.
They will be joined by special guests Island Spice Dance Company, Nouveau Gypsy Belly Dance, Ariel Poling of Sudeeka, Nelleke from Kauai and others to create an enticing and dynamic fusion dance performance.
Included in the ticket price, which is $30 for general admission and $40 for front-row seats, is a five-course meal prepared by the Edible World Institute’s culinary school. The dinner and show get underway at 6 p.m.
A highly sought after workshop instructor and choreographer, Krien’s workshops are often described as “profound and inspirational.” Born in San Francisco, the granddaughter of Zen philosopher Alan Watts, Krien grew up in a family of intellectuals and artists committed to higher consciousness. She studied with Jamila Salimpour at age 3, eventually becoming the opening act for Sony recording artist Ottmar Liebert in 1996.
She is also the creator of SEED (Self Esteem, Empowerment, and Education through Dance, a youth mentoring after school dance program operating in multiple places around the world, including Kona via Stephanie Bolton of Island Spice Dance Company and Nouveau Gypsy Belly Dance who will be performing.
Rounding out the evening will be a Latin Dance Party featuring the Big Island’s favorite salsa DJ, DJ Eyal Fitoussi spinning classics on vinyl mixed with world rhythms.
Also taking place Saturday night is the free Gypsy Night Market with crafts and imports from 20 local vendors, a refreshment oasis, and aromatic hookah lounge. The market opens at 5 p.m.
