HONOLULU (AP) — The U.S. Department of Justice has filed a motion asking the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals to expedite its appeal in the travel ban case in Hawaii.
In the legal filing Friday, the government challenged a ruling in Hawaii that put an indefinite hold on President Donald Trump’s order to suspend new visas for people in six Muslim-majority countries and halt the U.S refugee program.
Justice Department lawyers say they’re prepared to present appeal arguments as soon as possible.
They say preventing the ban presents an issue of national significance and that other courts have acted quickly on the travel ban.
Deputy Hawaii Attorney General Joshua Wisch says the state doesn’t object to the motion.
Ruling in a Washington state case, the 9th Circuit refused in February to reinstate Trump’s initial travel ban.
