Warning-level surf hits Kona, Ka’u, Kohala coasts

A large west-northwest swell brought warning level surf to the Big Island’s leeward coast on Sunday.

National Weather Service forecasters based in Honolulu called for 8- to 12-foot waves along west-facing shores of the Kona, Kohala and Ka’u coasts, with the highest surf expected from Kailua-Kona to South Point.

The warning was dropped Sunday afternoon, however, a high surf advisory remains in effect until 6 p.m. today. Forecasters expect waves between 8 and 11 feet with some higher sets throughout the day.
