Three people were rescued Saturday after a man went to assist two girls who were swept more than 100 yards off shore by currents while swimming in waters off Shipman Beach in Keaau.
Responding to the 2:04 p.m. alarm, fire rescue personnel arrived at the scene to find the man and two minor females about 100 to 150 yards offshore. The girls had apparently been swept out by currents and the man entered to assist and ran into trouble himself.
Fire rescue personnel used Chopper 1 to bring the swimmers to shore. All three were uninjured. All declined medical attention.
The two girls were turned over to police until approval was given by their parents to leave them with the responsible adult who brought them to the beach.
