Dempsey wins student technology solutions contest

Kealakehe High School student Robert Dempsey is among the winners of the Hawaii: Next 50 Contest.

He won the essay category for entrants in grades 9-12. Winners will be honored today at the Hawaii State Capitol for their ideas on using technology. Students statewide submitted essays, artwork, and videos on how they would use existing or future technology to create more affordable housing, achieve food sustainability or promote new and innovative industries.

A panel of judges from aio Foundation, Hawaii Crop Improvement Association, Chamber of Commerce Hawaii, Sultan Ventures, and Hawaii Technology Development Corporation selected winning entries.

Kaloko Fishpond workday planned

Hui Kaloko-Honokohau invites the community to its monthly workday from 8 a.m. to noon Sunday.

Volunteers will focus on invasive species removal to improve fishpond health for food production. Volunteers should meet at Kaloko Fishpond in Kaloko-Honokohau National Historical Park. Wear closed toed shoes and long sleeve clothing for added protection.

Statewide hunting survey underway

The Department of Land and Natural Resources, Division of Forestry and Wildlife (DLNR-DOFAW) is seeking public comment from hunters on its annual statewide hunting survey. The annual survey helps improve DLNR’s game management in state public hunting areas. Its Hawaii game management program provides opportunities for recreational and subsistence hunting of 16 species of game birds and six species of game mammals.
