The Kona Amateur Radio Society meets from 2-5 p.m. Sunday at the south end of Wawaloli Beach Park at NELHA. All members, friends, and those interested in amateur (HAM) radio are invited.
Attendees are encouraged to bring an Irish or green dish to share during the St. Patrick’s Day potluck.

Grants help Native Hawaiians study STEM subjects
The U.S. Department of Labor announces the availability of $497,000 in funding to serve Native Hawaiian and Alaskan Native youth and young adults, ages 14-24, to develop skills needed for high-growth, in-demand occupations and industries.
These grants are designed to provide skills in science, technology, engineering and math fields. They aim to increase Native Hawaiian and Alaska Native enrollment in STEM-related certificate and degree programs, as well as provide education mentoring programs and work experience in STEM-related professions.
Public and private nonprofit organizations, tribal organizations and institutions of higher education are eligible. Funds are awarded on a competitive basis.
The closing date for applications is April 7.

Composting classes planned
Recycle Hawaii, a local nonprofit educational organization, celebrates 25 years of service and education on recycling and waste reduction.
As part of its educational outreach, Recycle Hawaii is offering its popular backyard composting workshops on Saturday at Keaau Recycling and Reuse Center, on April 1 at the West Hawaii Civic Center and on May 6 at Hawaii Green Earth Farm in Waimea. Sessions are from 10 a.m. to noon and cover basic composting principles and techniques ideal for beginners and those wanting a refresher. Additional information on worm composting or bokashi methods is also included.
