KBFD celebrates its 31st anniversary this Friday. Chairman and founder Mr. Kea Sung Chung (83) started his venture in TV back in 1976 by leasing 30 minutes every Saturday morning on station KIKU now called KHNL, broadcasting KBS national news in black and white providing the only news source from South Korea in Hawaii. KHNL was called KIKU prior to 1984. Not to be confused with KIKU channel today which was called KHAI prior to 1993.
Locally owned and operated, KBFD started in 1986 under tremendous odds and we survived month to month. I felt like quitting so many times but my father kept the course never swaying despite hardships. I started as a cameraman in 1986 while also acting as master control operator (played video tapes on air) at nights. The most humbling experience was covering a news event at the Governor’s office. We couldn’t afford a broadcast camera which weighed 40-60 lbs, which was so heavy you needed a tripod and separate battery belt to power everything. I was the rookie in the room filled with reporters, cameramen, sound and lighting techs jockeying for the best angle, I was holding a consumer home video camera on my shoulder with an extra battery pack in my pocket. Guys would look at me as if I didn’t belong there holding inferior equipment and subtly shoved me here and there. I stood my ground and took the news as my hand shook from holding the camera on my shoulder so long. I learned not to zoom in from a distance unless you have a tripod and I vowed to bring KBFD to compete with local networks that day. It was the primary reason I had pushed to transition KBFD to High Definition.
