The American Red Cross of Hawaii honored its Heroes of the Year during the Red Cross Centennial Heroes Breakfast on March 4 at the Waikiki Beach Marriott Resort and Spa. Their deeds are directly linked to the Red Cross mission of preventing and alleviating human suffering. This year’s Centennial Heroes Breakfast included special Centennial Heroes, Alfred L. Castle, known as the “founder” of the Hawaii Red Cross (grandson Al Castle accepted the award on his behalf) and LeBurta Atherton, a World War II gray lady volunteer, who is turning 100 years old along with the Hawaii Red Cross.

The Big Island Volunteers of the Year is Anthony Colombo. Kerri Scott was selected as the Oahu Volunteer of the year, Elaine Olson was recognized from Maui and Bob Robertson was honored from Kauai.
Community Heroes were Special Recognition Hero, Ken Lee (posthumously); Animal Hero, Maggie Edwards; Centennial Hero, Alfred L. Castle and Centennial Hero, LeBurta Atherton.
