Keck Observatory talk set for March 24 in Waimea

Guest speaker Shrinivas Kulkarni, from California Institute of Technology, will present a free talk at Keck Headquarter’s Hualalai Learning Theater on March 24 at 7 p.m. It is open to the public; seating is limited.

The title is “The Restless Universe: Palomar Transient Factory.” In the past 100 years, astronomers have secured recognition of classes of explosions ranging from exotic eruptions to the death of stars (supernovae). The Palomar Transient Factory and its successor, the Zwicky Transient Factory (ZTF), are high tech projects that chart the night sky and find them. Working with the Keck Observatory, these projects are making discoveries and complement a future flagship project, the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope.
